These days a number of men are exercising ''mindfully,'' including many athletes -- the Yankees' Orlando Hernández, known as El Duque, practices yoga, and Tiger Woods does Pilates.-- New York Times ( MEN'S HEALTH) Sep.2002

"I believe great physical conditioning gives me an advantage, an extra gear. Just as form is an important element of the golf swing, it is also an important factor in weight training "Sam Sneed is living proof that you can minimize the effects of time by remaining flexible. .. . Annika Sorenstam
#1 World

Annika Sorenstam continues rewriting the LPGA record books, launching herself into legendary golfer status. Annika is very smart about how she exercises and trains. She can perform several hundred repetitions of strengthening for her "core" muscles every day without hurting herself. Not all of these repetitions are the typical abdominal crunches. She incorporates Pilates training into her workout for variety and to keep her workout safe.

After years of lifting heavy metal, Rocco has ditched the weights and begun doing Pilates
Rocco hurt his back at the 2001British Open. The ensuing time off was a blessing, because it inspired Mediate to radically change his workout routine. After years of lifting heavy metal, he has ditched the weights and begun doing Pilates, a non impact strengthening workout he heard about from his wife, Linda. "It keeps me loose, keeps me fresh, keeps me strong," he says.

" Rocco is very loose. No matter whether he’s shooting 80 or 60, he’s still the same." -Tiger Woods

2002 World Ranking #15
"If you've followed my career you probably remember when I was nowhere near as physically fit as I am now. What I really wanted was to get stronger and more flexible, and to look and feel more like a professional athlete. I've changed my routine to go easier on my back. I don't do squats or anything that involves a lot of compression of the spine. I've also scaled back on running, because of the pounding effect it has on the spine."

"I've added yoga to my routine recently, and combining that with my Pilates program gives me all of the cardiovascular workout I need. Pilates is a method of conditioning that involves hundreds of exercises designed to improve strength and flexibility without adding bulk.

Beth Daniel
32 career wins, including 1 major; inducted into World Golf Hall of Fame in 1999.
In a special session at the PGA of America Teaching & Coaching Summit , LPGA Hall of Famer Beth Daniel and Butch Harmon illuminated the differences by providing their perspective on how champions train, practice and play. Daniel works out hard in the off season– doing yoga, Pilates, stretching and strength training – to build her fitness level, and maintain her conditioning during the golf season. At the championship level, fitness has become more important than ever, and many top players work on their conditioning year-round. "Strength is important," Daniel's said. "It helps you hold your positions. Strength also helps you on trouble shots – hitting out of long grass, for example, or buried lies. Improved conditioning can help elite golfers handle the endurance of the year, It's important for the longevity of your career."

Rich Beem
1st 2002 PGA Championship
2002 World Ranking #25

The PGA Champion Rich Beem has risen 254 positions to World No.25 this year and his outstanding season means that he tops the 'net' gain list for the 2002 season. He credited his Pilates training for his back rehab and his ability to engage his stomach muscles so he could swing freely with out pain. Beem Used Pilates to control his stomach muscles and held off Tiger Woods to win the 2002 PGA Championship.

Can you describe what it was that you found that worked for you under pressure today? "I really just focused in on tightening up my abdominal muscles(Core Stabilization). I know it sounds kind of crazy, but when I did that, I was able to take the pressure out of my arms and shoulders and I was able to make a pretty free stroke."

Lee Westwood
There was no way back for Team USA after Tiger Woods was humbled by Europe's Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood. In June Westwood thought that he may not play in the Ryder Cup because of a trapped nerve that was causing him trouble. He had pins and needles in his left arm, unable to square the club on release. He began practicing Pilates to strengthen stomach muscles. It helped reinvigorate the 29-year-old from Workshop. He lost nearly a stone and regained the control of his swing.

Let The Big Dog Hunt
